In a perfect world, you'd be able to invite everyone and their mother to your wedding and reception. But with wedding planning costs that quickly add up, seemingly out of nowhere, that is just not realistic. So what do you do? Here are some simple guidelines to follow.

Allow "plus ones" if:

1. Your guest is married (simple enough) or in a long-term relationship.

2. If your guest doesn't know anyone else at the wedding - perhaps they live across the country for example.

3. The guest is an immediate family member.

Naturally, you'll also want to allow the members of your wedding party to bring their significant others. As for a great idea to try and ensure that no one who isn't supposed to bring a plus one adheres to that rule, make sure that your guest's name is printed on the response card. And if someone still chooses to ignore that and writes in a name, you'll just have to brace yourself and call them to explain politely that you just don't have the budget to allow for extra guests.
